About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Nerello Mascalese comes from Contrada Feudo di Mezzo in the northern valley of Etna.
Grapes
100% Nerello Mascalese.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed and lightly crushed. Fermentation starts with a pied-de-cuve, and the must remains in contact with the skins for one night. The wine is not fined and is filtered before bottling through 5-micron polyethylene cartridges. Sulphur may or may not be added according to grape quality and wine stability; reported values range from 15 to 60 mg/L.
Ageing
Ageing takes place in neutral epoxy tanks holding 2,500–8,000 L.
Technical data
Annual production is approximately 7,000 bottles. The wine is classified as IGP Terre Siciliane Rosato and packaged in a transparent 750 ml Burgundy bottle. Zalto Universal is the recommended stemware.
Tasting profile
Pistemutta® draws on the traditional Etna “contadino” approach: brief skin contact produces a light-bodied, fluid and elegant style.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2020. Pistemutta® began as a project for Patagonia®, built around the shared aim of working with respect for nature. Rather than applying a new label to an existing wine, it was conceived as an interpretation of historic Etna farming and winemaking, predating the estate's own work on the volcano.
