About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Riserva is made from the Villa Grande single vineyard at the Greppone Mazzi estate in Montalcino. The vineyard lies at 250–450 m above sea level, faces southwest and has clay-loam to loam soils rich in shale and limestone. The wider estate contains 25 hectares of vines in two distinct sectors: the steep hillsides of Greppi and Le Logge in the southern part of the appellation.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese Grosso.
Vinification
Careful grape selection accompanies the early- to mid-October harvest. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. A long post-fermentation maceration follows at 28–29 °C and lasts more than 20 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. After blending, it receives an extended period of bottle ageing.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with garnet nuances. The complex bouquet combines cherry and raspberry with floral tones, tobacco, cedar and wild herbs. The palate is rich, linear and elegant, finishing with freshness, savoury persistence and a prolonged aftertaste.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18 °C.
Vintage notes
The 2019 growing season followed a regular pattern. A mild, rainy winter established useful water reserves before a hot, dry summer without extreme heat spikes.
Label / history
First produced in 1979, the Riserva represents a single-vineyard interpretation of Sangiovese Grosso from Greppone Mazzi.
