About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Campo Bianco is a single vineyard of just under one hectare on the first slopes of Segalari Hill in Bolgheri. It lies in a small east–west-oriented valley crossed by the Fossa di Bolgheri stream. This is one of the cooler parts of the area, with a mild, dry and windy Mediterranean climate and pronounced summer differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The alluvial soil is very deep and finely sandy-clayey, with a moderate to abundant pebble component. The vineyard is managed under integrated sustainable viticulture practices.
Grapes
A field blend from Campo Bianco comprising approximately 70% Vermentino together with Fiano, Verdicchio, Petit Manseng and Manzoni Bianco. The varieties are grown and vinified together for their combined relationship with the site, following the mixed-vineyard model used before phylloxera.
Vinification
For 2024, the whole vineyard was harvested at once on 10 September during the cooler morning hours. The picking date is selected to balance the ripeness of varieties destined for co-fermentation. Selected grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. The must settles spontaneously overnight at the cool ambient temperature of the cellar before fermentation.
Ageing
Approximately 10 months on the lees in stainless-steel tanks with frequent stirring, followed by about 10 months in bottle.
Technical data
2024: 14.5% alcohol; 5.29 g/L total acidity; 0.36 g/L residual sugar; 22 g/L dry extract; 0.054 g/L total sulfur dioxide. Energy: 360 kJ / 86 kcal per 100 ml.
Tasting profile
An intense, balanced, savory and fresh white wine. Its aromatic profile combines citrus, saffron, broom, chamomile, exotic fruit, pastry and bread crust with a mineral, hydrocarbon-like note. It is full-bodied and continues to evolve with time and aeration.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 10–12°C and uncork approximately 10 minutes beforehand. Pair with intensely flavored fish dishes, white meat, vegetables, mushrooms and mature cheeses. It can age for around 10 years when stored horizontally in a cool, dark place.
Vintage notes
Spring 2024 was cool and rainy. The customary hot, dry summer began in July, although conditions were neither oppressive nor still. Fine weather continued through September, interrupted by rain followed by sunny, windy periods that dried the grapes and soils effectively. The vines developed vigorous canopies and produced good yields, while the breezy conditions limited plant-health problems. The harvested grapes were healthy and highly fragrant.
Label / history
The first production was in 2002 under the name Guado al Melo Bianco. Criseo means “made of gold.” The label depicts a Tuscan summer night, golden wine in the cups and dancing satyrs. It refers to an Etruscan-Roman story in which Bacchus offered humanity dance, music and wine as consolations for life’s difficulties. The dancing satyrs also honor the Etruscans, the area’s earliest civilization and early Italian winegrowers.
