Vineyard and terroir

Campo Giardino is a one-hectare vineyard on the first slopes of Segalari Hill in Bolgheri. It occupies a small east–west-oriented valley crossed by the Fossa di Bolgheri stream. The site has a mild, dry and windy Mediterranean climate; the valley is among the coolest parts of the area and experiences particularly wide summer differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Its very deep alluvial soils are sandy-clayey, with more clay-rich outcrops and abundant pebbles. The vineyard is managed according to integrated sustainable viticulture practices.

Grapes

A field blend of 30 red grape varieties, comprising local grapes and varieties from elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The varieties were selected for their suitability to the site and their ability to complement one another. The field-blend approach recalls the biodiversity of vineyards before phylloxera and gives the vineyard resilience against adverse conditions.

Vinification

For the 2021 vintage, the vineyard was picked five times during September, with varieties grouped according to their ripening periods. The varieties in each lot were co-fermented separately. Following wood ageing, the lots were blended and the wine was clarified through successive rackings without filtration.

Ageing

About 24 months in non-new wood on the lees, with weekly stirring, followed after final blending by 3–4 months in stainless steel. Bottle ageing lasts at least 12 months.

Technical data

2021: 16% alcohol; 5.75 g/L total acidity; 0.69 g/L residual sugar; 33 g/L dry extract; 0.099 g/L total sulfur dioxide. Energy: 389 kJ / 93 kcal per 100 ml.

Tasting profile

The aromatic profile includes small berries, broom, incense, cinchona, menthol, pepper, sweet tobacco and myrtle. The palate is notably fresh and full-bodied, with elegant tannins, and continues to evolve in the glass and with bottle age.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C and uncork about 10 minutes beforehand. It can be enjoyed alone or with intensely flavored dishes. It is capable of very long ageing when stored horizontally in a cool, dark place.

Vintage notes

Heavy winter rain supplied the vineyard with sufficient water throughout the 2021 growing cycle. From mid-May through October, conditions were warm, dry and well ventilated, without significant plant-health problems. Temperatures were generally average apart from several short spells of intense heat. Harvest took place slightly later than usual, with healthy, balanced grapes.

Label / history

The first vintage was 2003. The name refers to Herodotus’s Jassarte River, which marked the northern boundary between East and West. Here it represents a borderland and a meeting place for the exchange of knowledge, grape varieties, tools and aspirations throughout wine history. The label depicts two mirrored satyrs harvesting grapes, symbolizing two worlds coming together.
