About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
DO comes from a vineyard on the hills of Cinigiano at the northeastern edge of the Maremma, in the shadow of Mount Amiata and close to the sea. The southeast-facing site lies at 200 m on sandy clay-loam soil. Vines are spur-pruned on permanent cordons.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage; a precise percentage breakdown is not published. The wine combines French and Tuscan varieties.
Vinification
Harvest extends from the end of August through the end of September because the varieties ripen at different times. Grapes are hand-picked and pass over a selection table. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with 20–25 days of maceration.
A detailed production account describes four separate harvests. Varieties with similar ripening times are grouped together, fermented in four separate steel tanks and kept apart during maturation in wood. The final blend is assembled only after wood ageing.
Ageing
The technical sheet gives 18–24 months in French oak barrels followed by at least 12 months in bottle. The catalogue instead describes two and a half years in Allier oak and one year in bottle in the estate’s vault.
Technical data
Yield is 32 hl/ha, and production is approximately 15,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
A powerful and continuously evolving sensory profile moves among fruit, vegetal tones, spices, tobacco and mineral impressions. Black fruit and blueberry can emerge alongside herbal and spicy notes. Its changing blend gives each vintage and even each stage of a tasting a different expression.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with game and spicy dishes.
Label / history
The blend is known as the “Crazy Blend” and is framed as a “Super Cru” rather than a Super Tuscan. Its musical concept links multiple grapes with the notes of a musical scale, bringing a musical identity to the Maremma vineyard even though loudspeakers are not installed there.
