About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Roccolo is a parcel of the Barthenau Estate in UGA Mazon. Situated at 400 m, it faces northwest and has a gentle 5% gradient. Planted in 1942 and still trained to pergola, it is described as Alto Adige’s oldest Pinot Noir vineyard. The pergola canopy moderates direct sunlight, while the old vines naturally produce low yields and concentrated fruit.
The soil consists of clay- and mineral-rich sedimentary rocks from the Werfen Formation, a geological feature presented as unique within Alto Adige viticulture. Vermiculite, a rare biostimulating clay, is notably abundant.
Grapes
100% Pinot Nero.
Vinification
The grapes are entirely hand-harvested and fully destemmed. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with remontage, or pump-overs. The parcel has been vinified separately since 2012 as the most limited Pinot Nero selection from the Barthenau Estate.
Ageing
The wine ages first in barriques and then in concrete tanks. Bottle maturation follows in the Barthenau cellars at Mazon.
Tasting profile
Deep ruby red. The aromatic profile combines Amarelle cherry and lingonberry with subtle vanilla and delicate oak. The palate is dense yet highly elegant, with vivid, precisely defined acidity, velvety tannins, pronounced minerality and considerable aromatic concentration.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 14–16 °C with red meat, game or mild cheeses.
Label / history
The vineyard was planted in 1942 using the traditional pergola training system. Separate vinification began in 2012.
