About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vintage Tunina originates from approximately 16 hectares on Ronco del Fortino. The hilly vineyards face southwest and northeast and are rooted in predominantly Eocene flysch marls and sandstones. Guyot and cappuccina training are used, with 6,000–7,000 vines per hectare and yields of 40–60 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
A genuine field blend of Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia and a small proportion of a local sweet-wine grape. The selected varieties are harvested together, generally around two weeks later than the normal harvest, depending on the year.
Technical data
Alcohol: 13.5%. Acidity: 5.40–6.00‰. Expected life is normally 7–8 years and exceeds 10 years in the best vintages.
Tasting profile
Bright straw yellow with golden highlights. The bouquet is intense, broad, elegant and persistent, with honey and wildflower notes. Dry, velvety and harmonious on the palate, it combines a particularly full body with exceptional length.
Serving and pairing
Suitable for truffle-based first courses and a wide range of fish dishes, particularly oven-baked fish or fish served with sauce. It can also accompany poultry and other white meats. A highlighted pairing is fresh salmon stuffed with Parmesan and artichoke.
Vintage notes
Trials of the field blend began with the 1973 harvest; 1975 was the first vintage released under the Vintage Tunina name and label. The 2015 harvest was its 40th vintage. The 1997 vintage was named Wine of the Year by Gambero Rosso in 1999, while the 1998 vintage received the Wine Oscar from the Associazione Italiana Sommelier.
Label / history
Tunina was the name of the original female owner of the vineyard land. The wine is also dedicated to Casanova’s poorest lover, a Venetian governess named Antonia whose diminutive was Tunina. In 2003, after visiting the Abbey of Monreale in Palermo, Silvio Jermann added a Greek-key border around the label’s hexagon, inspired by the abbey’s Arab-Norman decoration. Luigi Veronelli called it the “Mennea of Italian wines” in 1979. Silvio Jermann’s daughter Sylvia Tunina was born on 28 November 1999, the day the 1997 vintage received its Gambero Rosso distinction.
