About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Bionzo lies in Costigliole d’Asti (At). The 12-acre vineyard has a southern exposure at 250 m above sea level and clay-like limestone-and-marl soils. The vines average 60 years of age, while the wine and vineyard narratives also refer to almost century-old vines. Naturally low yields contribute concentration and complexity.

Grapes

100% Barbera.

Vinification

The general method combines maceration and alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats for an average of 14–15 days. The 2016 vintage underwent approximately 10 days of maceration and alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, 20% new and the remainder second-use.

Ageing

The general profile specifies at least six months in French oak, followed by at least six months in bottle. The 2016 technical sheet gives 12 months in barrel and approximately six months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2016 has 14.5% alcohol, total acidity of 6.5 g/L and a pH of 3.6. Its listed format is 750 ml. Average production is 10,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

The 2016 is violet-red. Fresh plum, blueberry jam and medlar shape the bouquet. Dense fruit flavours and tapered tannins form a multifaceted, balanced palate. The broader profile combines natural concentration with mineral notes and aromas of chamomile and blackberry.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–17 °C in a Bordeaux glass.
