About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The wine comes from a mass selection of the indented-leaf Pignolo biotype planted in 1983 beneath the wall of the Ancient Belvedere on Rosazzo hill. The vines produce the variety’s characteristic small, pine-cone-shaped bunches.

Grapes

Pignolo.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates, destemmed and softly crushed, then vinified in truncated cone-shaped vats.

Ageing

The wine undergoes lengthy maturation in second-use barriques. This prolonged élevage softens and disciplines the variety’s assertive tannins.

Tasting profile

Deep garnet red with dark veining and an austere appearance. The broad, intense nose begins with dried plum, red blackberry, sour-cherry jam and tamarind, recalling the interior of a cigar box. Blueberry, rhododendron, fern, violet and elderberry follow, before black pepper, clove, incense and cinnamon emerge. Pipe tobacco, cornelian cherry, India ink and roasted coffee complete the expansive aromatic profile. Powerful and complex on the palate, it retains marked freshness, with dense yet elegant tannins and a saline finish. It develops slowly and rewards patience, gradually becoming harmonious and nuanced.

Label / history

The name Eremita recalls the legend of the hermit Alemanno, who settled on Rosazzo hill in the ninth century. The first traces of Pignolo in the area date to the late eighteenth century. Known locally as “pignul,” the fragile, low-yielding variety approached extinction in the late nineteenth century before being recovered at Rosazzo.
