About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Marinaia draws on Sangiovese and Merlot vineyards at Santa Restituta, between 320 and 420 metres, with west and south-west exposures. The Sangiovese grows on marl, limestone and calcareous sandstone with marine deposits, while the Merlot is planted in sandy clay. Training combines spurred cordon and Guyot at 6,200 vines per hectare.
Grapes
50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot.
Vinification
All vineyard and cellar work is manual. Fully mature grapes are carefully selected and harvested into 20 kg crates. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, with pump-overs and manual punch-downs.
Ageing
The wine matures for up to 18 months in 225 L French-oak barrels, followed by at least nine months in bottle.
Technical data
IGT Toscana. The stated format is 0.75 L and production is 6,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
The 2016 is ripe and lifted, with dried herbs, cedar and leather layered over dried dark plum. It is full-bodied and very chewy, with drying tannins and a fruit-driven finish.
