About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Sangiovese comes from the estate vineyards at Santa Restituta in Montalcino’s Tavernelle zone. West- and south-west-facing sites lie at 320–410 m. The soils combine marl and galestro with limestone, calcareous sandstone and marine deposits. Vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot at 6,200 plants per hectare. Mediterranean vegetation surrounds the vineyards, which are ventilated by sea breezes.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese from various clones.

Vinification

All work in the vineyards and cellar is manual. Perfectly mature grapes are carefully selected and harvested into 20 kg crates. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, with pump-overs and manual punch-downs.

Ageing

Maturation lasts up to three years in 500 and 4,000 L French-oak vessels, followed by at least six months in bottle. The 2021 spent 36 months in a mixture of medium and large French-oak formats.

Technical data

The 2021 production is given as 9,970 bottles. The technical sheet separately gives 15,000 bottles in 750 ml format and 70 magnums of 1.5 L.

Tasting profile

The 2021 opens with dried cherry, raspberry, cedar and liquorice, joined in other descriptions by plum, blackberry, vanilla, toast, sour cherry, cranberry, ginger, bitter orange, tobacco, dark spice, chocolate, sage and rosemary. It is medium- to full-bodied, with polished yet firm tannins, fresh acidity and a linear, tightly wound finish. Its texture is rich and voluminous without losing lift or structure.

Vintage notes

The 2020 is generous and fragrant, combining red mulberry, cherry, rose, tobacco and sandalwood with vigorous tannins, vivid acidity and a balsamic finish. The 2019 is more mineral and focused, with black cherry, slate, eucalyptus and refined tannins. The 2018 is expressive and spicy, with strawberry, cherry, herbs and lively acidity. The 2017 is fresh and elegant, with red fruit, rose, mineral and sleek tannins; decanting may help its aromas unfold. The 2016 is concentrated and energetic, with marasca cherry, vivid acidity and persistent powdery tannins.
