About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The historical production zone comprises the entire municipality of Scansano and parts of Campagnatico, Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano, Roccalbegna and Semproniano. Maximum permitted production under the DOCG regulations is 9,000 kg/ha.
Grapes
The appellation requires at least 85% Sangiovese and permits up to 15% other red grape varieties authorized in Tuscany. These may include traditional varieties such as Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Malvasia, Colorino and Alicante, as well as Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah and other international dark-skinned varieties.
Vinification
All vinification stages must take place within the grape-production area, in accordance with the production rules originating in 1978. Bottling must also occur within that area, apart from producers holding historical rights to bottle elsewhere from before DOCG recognition.
Tasting profile
The vintage style is ruby-colored, with a fruity, vinous aroma. The palate is fresh and savory, combining softness with restrained tannin. It is intended as a youthful expression that may be sold in the year following harvest.
Label / history
Morellino di Scansano attained Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status beginning with the 2007 harvest, developing from the DOC established in 1978. DOCG traceability is represented by the Italian State seal, which replaced the consortium seal introduced in 2004.
Viticulture in the Scansano and Albegna valleys has ancient roots. Archaeological discoveries include earthenware vessels containing Vitis vinifera seeds from the fifth century BC and bronze figures carrying the sickles traditionally used by vine growers. After the Roman conquest of Ghiaccioforte around 280 BC, agricultural settlement expanded. Wine from the area was exported to the western provinces of the Roman Empire, as indicated by amphorae bearing the initials of the Sestii family found in a shipwreck off Marseille.
The Consorzio Tutela del Vino Morellino di Scansano was established in 1992 by a group of local producers.
