About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

La Forra is produced from Sangiovese grown in the La Forra contrada at Tenuta di Nozzole, in Greve in Chianti. The vineyard descends from a ridge into a gorge surrounded by woodland and lakes. It lies at 300–330 m above sea level on loamy-clay soils with little skeletal material. The Guyot-trained vines are planted at 4,444 plants per hectare.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by approximately four weeks of maceration.

Ageing

The wine matures for at least 24 months in barriques before further bottle refinement.

Technical data

Alcohol: 14.5%. Approximately 40,000 bottles were produced from the 2021 vintage. Ageing potential: up to 10 years. First vintage: 1980.

Tasting profile

The 2021 is ruby red. Mature red fruit, balsamic notes and bitter orange are integrated with the tertiary aromas of wood. The palate is pleasantly dry and notably vinous, with mature, flowing tannins. Balsamic impressions develop toward incense and tea infusion, followed by a long finish of vanilla and chocolate.

Vintage notes

The 2021 winter was mild, with rainfall continuing through the end of March and encouraging early budbreak. Cool, dry conditions in April slowed the vegetative cycle, while May and June were regular. The summer was hot and dry, particularly in August, whose final days brought some rain. Sunny, moderately warm and breezy conditions in September and October, together with cool nights, supported slow ripening.

Label / history

One of Tenute Folonari’s historic crus, La Forra takes its identity from its distinctive vineyard landscape at Nozzole. Its inaugural harvest was 1980.
