About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from 15-year-old vines in Tuscany’s coastal area. Organic vineyard practices and minimal intervention are employed.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in barriques using native yeasts. Cellar practices are organic and minimally interventionist, with little sulfur added. The wine is bottled without filtration and may therefore develop sediment.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least 24 months in 1,000-litre French oak casks, followed by further ageing in bottle.
Tasting profile
Refined, with excellent aromas, concentration and a fine texture.
Vintage notes
The 2019 growing season in Tuscany was very favourable. Summer was warm and dry but received sufficient rainfall, including rain in July and August. September temperatures remained close to seasonal averages. October had little rainfall overall, although rainy days were frequent. The resulting wines showed pronounced aromas, concentration and a refined texture.
Label / history
Pugnitello is a rare native red variety from Maremma. Its name means “little fist” in Italian, referring to its small bunches and berries. The variety has recently been revived through work by the University of Florence and small estates including Roccapesta.
