About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The hillside vineyard is located in Friuli Colli Orientali at approximately 150 metres above sea level, with south-eastern exposure and marl-and-sandstone soils. The vines were planted in 1958 and 1963 at a density of about 4,000 vines per hectare and are trained using the Cappuccina system.
Grapes
100% Picolit.
Tasting profile
Golden yellow in colour. The nose is sunny, intense and elegant, with aromas of apricot, citrus fruit, tobacco and almond paste. On the palate it initially spreads across the tongue and then envelops the mouth, combining freshness and pronounced aromatic character with sweetness that remains measured and balanced rather than cloying.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 10 °C. Classical pairings include foie gras and blue cheeses. More unconventional suggestions are raw oysters, sea truffles, caviar and raw langoustines.
Label / history
The name Picolit may refer either to the variety’s sparse production of berries and bunches or to the small size of its grapes. Its inflorescences are highly susceptible to floral abortion, so a bunch typically develops only about 10–15 sparse berries. Total production across Friuli is described as no more than 900 hectolitres. Its rarity made it a wine for major occasions in past centuries, served to princes and popes.
