History
The origin of the Casa Re name
In the 1920s, the Liberty-style villa overlooking the property was locally admired for its elegance and beauty. Residents began calling it Casa del Re, or “the King’s House.” The shortened form Casa Re subsequently became the place-name for the surrounding area and, in turn, the name of the estate.
The Casati family and the Masi acquisition
Until its sale, Casa Re belonged to the Casati family and operated as an eponymous wine-growing business in Montecalvo Versiggia, near Santa Maria della Versa. Under that ownership, it comprised a contiguous 13-hectare vineyard holding, planted predominantly with Pinot Nero, together with production and hospitality buildings and the Liberty-style villa.
On 4 September 2023, Masi Agricola announced a preliminary agreement to acquire 100% of Società Agricola Casa Re. Masi presented the move into Oltrepò Pavese as a complementary extension beyond its Veneto base, intended to strengthen the group’s work with Metodo Classico sparkling wines and create synergies with its sparkling-wine activities in Valdobbiadene and Trentino. The agreement provided for Masi to assume direct management of viticulture at the end of the 2023 growing year, while formal completion was scheduled for January 2024.
The agreed conditions were substantially fulfilled by the end of December 2023, allowing Casa Re to enter Masi’s consolidated group accounts for that year. The transfer was formally completed in January 2024.
First releases under Masi
At Vinitaly 2024, Masi presented Moxxé del Re Brut 2020, a Metodo Classico Oltrepò Pavese DOCG made from Pinot Nero. Its name joined the existing Moxxé identity to Casa Re and marked the estate’s first major release following the acquisition. The wine was introduced more broadly in May 2024.
Masi’s first harvest at Casa Re began on 20 August 2024. The Pinot Nero was judged suitable for the production of Moxxé del Re, although sporadic late-season powdery mildew reduced the estate’s potential crop.
During 2024, Società Agricola Casa Re S.r.l. was merged into Società Agricola Strà del Milione S.r.l., another Masi-controlled agricultural company. The merger involved no capital increase or share exchange, and its accounting and tax effects were backdated to 1 January 2024. Casa Re continued as an estate and vineyard identity despite the absorption of its former operating company.
Expansion of the Casa Re range
In 2025, Masi introduced Moxxé del Re Rosé 2021, a rosé Metodo Classico made entirely from Pinot Nero grown at Casa Re. The new release was presented to international markets during Wine Paris, ProWein and Vinitaly.
The 2025 Pinot Nero harvest began on 16 August. Fruit intended for Moxxé del Re showed analytical parameters consistent with suitable maturity, and the initial indicators pointed to a particularly promising vintage.
On 12 March 2026, Masi announced Pinot Noir del Re, the first still red in the Casa Re range, for presentation at Vinitaly 2026. The project used specially selected Pinot Nero clones and extended the estate’s focus from Metodo Classico sparkling wines to a still interpretation of the same variety. At that stage, Casa Re was described as a 15-hectare property occupied by one contiguous vineyard block and devoted entirely to Pinot Nero.
Terroir
Tenuta Casa Re lies at Montecalvo Versiggia in the Versa Valley, close to Santa Maria della Versa, within Oltrepò Pavese in the Province of Pavia, Lombardy. The property occupies the rolling hills south of the Po River and forms one contiguous vineyard block in a predominantly rural, visually open landscape.
The area has a continental climate. Marine breezes approaching from the south have limited influence because they are blocked by the Apennines. Cold winters and early springs have historically supported viticulture in these hills.
The soils combine limestone and marl with lenses of clay and silt. Within Casa Re, the Pinot Nero grows on calcareous ground enriched with marl and silty clay. This combination of continental conditions, rolling relief and calcareous-marly soils is the environmental basis of the estate’s specialization in Pinot Nero for both sparkling and still wine.
Winemaking
Casa Re is devoted to Pinot Nero, managed as one contiguous vineyard block. Masi assumed direct responsibility for vineyard management at the end of the 2023 crop year, bringing the estate under the supervision of the Masi Technical Group.
Selection is part of the estate’s varietal work: specially chosen Pinot Nero clones support the still-wine project introduced in 2026. Ripening is monitored analytically before harvest. In 2025, the fruit destined for Metodo Classico production showed values consistent with appropriate maturity.
The first Masi-managed harvest began on 20 August 2024. Sporadic powdery mildew attacks during the latter part of that season reduced potential quantities. In 2025, picking began earlier, on 16 August, with initial assessments indicating positive prospects for both maturity and quality.
Production at Casa Re is centered on Pinot Nero from the estate’s contiguous vineyard. The range encompasses Oltrepò Pavese DOCG Metodo Classico sparkling wines in white and rosé forms, together with a still Pinot Nero Pavia IGT introduced in 2026. Development and oenological oversight are entrusted to the Masi Technical Group, whose sparkling-wine experience spans several production areas within the wider group.
Philosophy
Casa Re represents what Masi calls a coherent expansion beyond its historic Veneto base: entry into a territory closely associated with Pinot Nero and Italian Metodo Classico, while applying the group’s technical experience in premium sparkling wine.
For Sandro Boscaini, Pinot Noir should be essential rather than ostentatious. It does not benefit from excess and should be handled with respect for its inherent character. His stated stylistic aim is a balance of refinement and silkiness, with complexity expressed through a medium-bodied, approachable structure.
The estate also forms part of Masi’s strategy of developing wines around distinct production territories. The objective is to combine Casa Re’s Oltrepò Pavese setting with the Masi Technical Group’s viticultural and oenological knowledge, international market experience and long-term research into Pinot Nero.
