About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from Tenuta La Fuga on the historic Camigliano slope, southwest of Montalcino, at approximately 350 m above sea level. The vineyards face southwest toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. Medium-textured clay soils rich in stones and sediments favour the development of polyphenols in Sangiovese. Vines are trained to low spur-pruned cordons. The current specification gives 5,000 vines per hectare; for 2018, the technical sheet records 4,000–5,500 vines per hectare, average production of 4.5 tonnes of grapes per hectare and a grape-to-wine yield of 65%.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel. The current specification gives approximately four weeks of maceration; for 2018, fermentation occurred at a controlled 28°C with about 20 days on the skins.
Ageing
The current specification requires at least 36 months in large barrels before bottle ageing. For 2018, the wine matured for four years in Italian-made 25 hl Slavonian oak barrels and was refined in bottle for at least six months. This style of Slavonian oak vessel has been used for La Fuga Brunello since its inception.

Vintage notes
In 2018, winter brought average rainfall and some snow, replenishing water reserves. Sporadic rain marked April before minimum temperatures rose sharply in the middle of the month. Frequent, abundant May rain and warm conditions supported healthy vegetative growth, with flowering beginning late in the month. Heat in June and July accelerated ripening. August and September alternated fine weather and rain; healthy grapes were harvested around mid-September.
