About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Barbaspinosa is the second-label red from the Poggetti Estate and comes from the same vineyard as Avvoltore in Massa Marittima. The south-west-facing site lies on clay soil rich in fossils and with slight acidity. The shared Vigna dell’Avvoltore setting is at 80–100 m above sea level on a mineral-rich limestone slope, around 7 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Warm days, long sunlight exposure and cool evenings characterize the growing season.

Grapes

90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested during the second and fourth weeks of September. Vinification takes place in vitrified cement tanks, with pumping over twice daily throughout an 18-day maceration.

Ageing

The wine spends 12 months in used oak barrels previously employed for Avvoltore, followed by four months in bottle before release.

Technical data

Yield: 6,000 kg/ha.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. The complex bouquet presents ripe plum and blackberry layered with vanilla, cedar and forest-floor notes. The palate has ripe black fruit, persistent length and abundant but well-integrated tannins. The style is robust yet approachable.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with wild boar or other braised meats.

Vintage notes

The wine has been produced under the Maremma Toscana Rosso DOC designation since 2015, although the displayed page heading identifies it as IGT Costa Toscana.

Label / history

The name Barbaspinosa comes from a character in a collection of short stories written for his children by the family’s great-grandfather, Giuseppe Leo Moris.
