About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Cometa comes from the Gurra and Dispensa vineyards in Menfi (AG). Dispensa lies at 75 m above sea level and has moderately deep soil tending toward chalkiness, with scant to almost absent structure and moderate lime. Gurra lies at 35 m and has moderately deep, highly chalky soil with little lime and absent structure.
The vines are trained on an espalier using Guyot pruning. Viticulture follows organic-farming criteria and the SOStain® protocol. Ground cover comprising beans, vetch and wild plants is used to increase organic matter and nitrogen while supporting soil microfauna. Vine health is managed with minimal quantities of sulphur and copper. Beneficial insects, mating disruption, zeolite, kaolin and plant extracts are used to deter phytophagous pests.
Grapes
100% Fiano. The limestone- and chalk-influenced ground accentuates the variety's Mediterranean aromatic character.
Tasting profile
The aromatic profile combines Mediterranean scrub, broom flowers and thyme with delicate notes of chamomile, hay, mango and pomelo. The palate begins with mineral character and lively, thirst-quenching fruit, then develops a slower, more harmonious rhythm. The finish is silky and tactile, with a refined aftertaste of ripe apricot, flowering almond and basil leaves.
Label / history
Cometa originated in experiments with Fiano begun during the 1990s. The project sought to create a substantial white wine capable of comparison with notable white wines internationally while expressing the character of this ancient Campanian variety in an individual way. The first vintage was 2000. Cometa is certified as an organic wine and carries the SOStain designation.
