About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vines grow on small plains sheltered by hills, in a warm, dry climate. The soils are gravel and sandstone, reclaimed from sparse natural surroundings.
Vinification
Ripe grapes are gently destemmed to keep the berries intact. Extraction focuses on fine skin tannins, intended to contribute 20–30% of the wine’s total tannins. At the beginning of fermentation, the solids are pumped over several times daily to obtain the desired colour and tannin level. After pressing, the must completes fermentation in barrels.
Ageing
The wine rests in stainless-steel tanks for six months. The 2009 vintage also spent two to four months in bottle.
Tasting profile
The nose is intense, with herbs and wild forest berries. The palate is rich and smooth, with light tannins and a pleasantly bitter edge. With maturity, the wine develops deeper, more expressive flavours.
Label / history
The name Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso means “Refosco with a red stalk”, referring to the reddish vine stems. Refosco’s history predates its arrival in northeastern Italy. It was reportedly the basis of a Roman wine favoured by Livia, wife of Augustus. Its first written mention dates to 1390, when Roman ambassadors presented the red wine as a gift. It was subsequently used for many years in blends to improve other wines.
Valentino Butussi founded the family business and worked from 1910 on its estate of approximately 15 ha. The business is continued by his son Angelo Butussi and four grandchildren.
