About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Vinea Vecchia comes from a single 0.5-hectare parcel in Anfiteatro, near the top of the Montefili hill. The vines were planted in 1981 and grow at 510 metres. The soils are described as Alberese, limestone and marl, while the parcel narrative also refers to schistose argillites. The vines are trained to spurred cordon. The site produces grapes distinguished from Montefili’s other parcels by their development and berry size.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, followed by maceration in steel.

Ageing

The wine matures for 26 months in 10 hl oak botti and receives a minimum of 12 months’ bottle ageing before release.

Technical data

The 2020 vintage has 14% alcohol, total acidity of 6.1 g/L, residual sugar of 0.0 g/L and total SO₂ of 90 mg/L. Bottles are individually numbered. Two different production totals appear for the same release: the introductory description gives 2,480 bottles plus 90 magnums, while the technical details give 2,572 bottles plus 46 magnums.

Tasting profile

The 2020 opens with ripe fruit, rose petal, red cherry and redcurrant, followed by sweet spices and balsamic nuances. Savoury notes of white pepper, juniper and earth add complexity. The palate is enveloping, intense and persistent, combining structure and integrated tannins with vibrant acidity and freshness. The finish is long, silky and resonant.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C and decant for 1–2 hours. Pair with grilled or roasted meats, rich pasta dishes and aged cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2020 release is presented as a naturally scarce, numbered single-parcel Gran Selezione. Its profile combines ripe fruit and sweet spice with balsamic and savoury accents, vibrant freshness and a lingering finish.
