Cònero in breve
Geologically it is an oddity: the Cretaceous limestones of the eastern Apennines, which elsewhere in the Marche lie inland behind a broad band of clays and sands, surface again here at the coast. The hills behind are gentle, averaging about 200 metres, with Miocene and Pliocene outcrops of pelite, sandstone and marl; seven tenths of the vineyards lie between 20 and 140 metres. The climate is Mediterranean with dry summers, 775 mm of rain falling mostly in September and October, and temperatures from 1–2 °C in January to 26–28 °C in high summer.
Cònero is the Riserva of the old Rosso Cònero: at least 85 per cent Montepulciano with up to 15 per cent Sangiovese, no more than nine tonnes a hectare, aged at least two years from the first of November of the harvest year. Rosso Cònero became a DOC in 1967, and Cònero a DOCG in 2004.
