Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva

6 cantine e 5 vini. The "castles" of the name are the hill towns that for centuries gravitated around Jesi — the city where Frederick II was born in 1194 — in the basin of the river Esino. Twenty-two communes in the province of Ancona and two in Macerata share the zone, about 20 kilometres from the Adriatic, rising from 96 metres at Jesi to 630 at Cingoli, with the Apennines, some of them above 2,000 metres, sheltering it from the west. Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva in breve

The hills belong to the sub-Apennine band that runs down to the sea, and their soils are rich in clay and calcium carbonate, not very permeable and prone to erosion, varying with the slope between finer clays and calcarenite. The climate is that of the high hills — more than 700 to 800 mm of rain and an average temperature below 14 °C — tempered by the sea and its breezes.

The Riserva is the top of the Verdicchio pyramid: at least 85 per cent Verdicchio, cropped at no more than ten tonnes a hectare, with no enrichment allowed, and aged at least 18 months from the first of December of the harvest year, six of them in bottle. The historic core may be labelled Classico. It was first recognised as a style of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC in 1995 and became a DOCG in 2010.
