Offida
2 cantine e 3 vini. In the south of the Marche, across the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo, the Offida DOCG runs from near the coast up into the high hills, with vineyards anywhere between 50 and 650 metres. The land belongs to the Adriatic foothill belt shared with Abruzzo: Plio-Pleistocene layers of sand and conglomerate at the base, then thick clays and silts with lenses of sand and gravel. Vini di Offida

Offida in breve
The soils are deep — always more than 80 to 100 centimetres — and hold a great deal of water, more than 150 mm, so the vines rarely go short even in summer droughts. They have a well-structured subsoil that drains easily and an even content of lime. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm but not sultry summers and fairly cold, rainy winters.
Offida makes three wines from three grapes, each at least 85 per cent: Pecorino and Passerina, two native whites, and a red from Montepulciano. The whites may be released from the first of March after the harvest; the red ages at least 24 months from the first of November, twelve of them in wood, and then three more in bottle. Offida became a DOC in 2001 and, on the strength of its reputation, a DOCG in 2011.
