Colli di Conegliano
3 cantine e 1 vino. The gentle ridges of upper Treviso province, a few kilometres from the Belluno Dolomites and a few dozen from Venice, run east to west and hold a small DOCG with an unusually wide range of wines. The mountains block cold air, the sea tempers the climate, and the soils — Cretaceous sea floor lifted by the Alps, worn down by glaciers and laid over with river and lake deposits full of moraine stones — drain the heavy rain easily. Colli di Conegliano in breve
Colli di Conegliano Bianco blends at least 30 per cent Manzoni Bianco with at least 30 per cent Pinot Bianco or Chardonnay and a little Sauvignon or Riesling; the Rosso needs at least a tenth each of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marzemino and Merlot. Refrontolo, dry or passito, is made mainly from Marzemino — Venetian nobles, the Tiepolo among them, praised "most precious wines called Marzemini" in the early fifteenth century. Torchiato di Fregona is made from Glera, Verdiso and Boschera, a grape grown in Fregona for centuries and almost nowhere else: the bunches dry on racks until Easter, and the berries are picked off by hand and pressed in the old way.
Vines were first tended here by the Paleoveneti in the Iron Age, and ordered vineyards arrived with the Romans and spread with the Benedictines. The DOCG was created in 2011.
