Recioto di Gambellara
Gambellara sits on the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Verona, where the Chiampo valley opens out at the last spurs of the Lessini mountains. Its hills rise to soft crests between 250 and 350 metres and are mostly volcanic: at the Parco San Marco the basalt stands in columns, while the soils above it are clay, sometimes rich in bentonite, broken by outcrops of limestone, marl and fossil-bearing sandstone. Recioto di Gambellara in breve
Recioto di Gambellara is made from Garganega alone, grown in the communes of Gambellara, Montebello Vicentino, Zermeghedo and Montorso Vicentino. The best-exposed bunches are sorted for drying, must start at no less than 10.5 per cent potential alcohol and finish at no less than 14, and the wine is made in the coldest months. It may not be sold before the first of September of the year after the harvest, and no word such as extra, superiore or selezionato may be added to the label.
It comes as Classico — traditionally also lightly frothy — and as a sparkling wine, both with bright notes of fruit and flowers. Recioto di Gambellara became a DOCG in 2008.
