Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from Fontane in Vittoria, in south-eastern Sicily. The organically farmed vineyard lies at 230 metres above sea level. Its medium-textured red soils derive from sub-Apennine sands of Pliocene origin and combine limestone with siliceous sand and clay. The vines are Guyot-trained, planted at 5,000 vines per hectare and average 25 years of age.
Grapes
40% Frappato di Vittoria and 60% Nero d’Avola.
Vinification
Harvest takes place from late September into early October. Fermentation begins spontaneously on the skins with indigenous yeasts.
Ageing
The wine matures in Slavonian oak casks and is subsequently aged in bottle.
Label / history
Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a red wine based on Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Its modern history is linked to the foundation of Vittoria in 1607, when Vittoria Colonna Henriquez-Cabrera granted land to the first settlers on condition that they also establish vineyards. The denomination received DOC status in 1974 and DOCG status in 2005.
