About the appellation

About Cerasuolo di Vittoria

The bedrock is mostly Miocene calcarenite under loose Pleistocene soils, with sandy and sandy-clay formations in places. Half the soils are leached brown earths and terra rossa on calcarenite; the rest are brown soils on sand and conglomerate, heavy vertisols and river alluvium. The climate is hot and dry, with little summer rain, and vines are trained only as bush vines or on simple trellises.

Cerasuolo — "cherry-red" — blends 50 to 70 per cent Nero d'Avola with 30 to 50 per cent Frappato. It may be sold from the first of June after the harvest; the Classico not before the 31st of March of the second year. The town of Vittoria itself was founded for wine: in 1606 Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, Countess of Modica, gave its first 75 settlers a hectare of land each on condition that they planted another with vines. Cerasuolo di Vittoria became a DOC in 1973 and a DOCG in 2005.
