Vineyard and terroir

The grapes are grown mainly at the Haberle estate, on sandy soils at 480–520 metres above sea level. The site has a cool mesoclimate with pronounced differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The vines are 17–45 years old.

Vinification

For the 2012 vintage, the grapes were harvested during the first weeks of September. The wine was fermented before being transferred to steel tanks.

Ageing

The wine rests for three months in steel tanks, followed by six months in bottle.

Label / history

Johann Lageder founded the winery in 1823, built its cellar and began selling its wines. The business has remained in the same family for five generations. In 1855, his son Alois inherited it and expanded it by purchasing additional vineyards.

After Alois IV died in 1963, his widow, Christine Rössler, and their 21-year-old eldest daughter, Wendelgard, assumed management. Wendelgard married the oenologist Luis von Dellemann in 1969; he subsequently took charge of winemaking. The company is now led by Wendelgard’s brother, Alois Lageder, who combines modern and traditional winemaking methods. Since 1990, approximately 50 ha of the family’s vineyards have been farmed according to biodynamic principles.
