Vineyard and terroir
Römigberg occupies a steep slope beside Lake Caldaro. Its south-southeast-facing vineyards receive intense sunlight and experience a warm, Mediterranean-influenced climate. The site combines varied soils and climatic conditions, with a subsoil of dolomite limestone and remnants of ancient glacial deposits.
The vineyard is cultivated organically and biodynamically as a near-closed farm organism. Oxen graze among the vines and olive trees, while the interaction of people, animals and plants supports biodiversity and the vineyard’s natural balance.
Grapes
Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot were planted at Römigberg during the vineyard’s transformation in the 1980s.
Vintage notes
Changing climatic conditions have shaped each vintage differently. The 2020 RARUM assortment comprises the 1996, 1998, 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2010 vintages.
Label / history
Römigberg was originally planted with Schiava. During the 1980s, the vineyard was reconfigured following extensive exchanges with international winegrowers, including Robert Mondavi. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot material imported from France replaced the earlier plantings. The steep site was laid out in small terraces and trained on wires using Guyot, becoming the first large, densely wire-planted vineyard in Alto Adige.
The parcel is called “Cor,” Latin for “heart,” which gave the wine its name. RARUM presents six mature vintages in a limited-edition wooden case supplied with a bottle opener, allowing their styles, development and ageing potential to be compared.
