Storia
Origins\nAltura Vigneto is located on Giglio Island in the Mediterranean, part of the Tuscan Archipelago. The winery was founded by Francesco Carfagna, a former mathematics professor who left his profession in 1985 and moved to Giglio.\n\n### Building the project\nIn 1987, he opened a restaurant that is still very successful today. Francesco then took on the project of restoring the ancient vineyards on the slopes of the southwestern part of the island. He bought around 4 hectares of abandoned vineyards and began bringing them back to life, building dry-stone walls to create terraces, working the soil and grafting the vines.\n\n### Realization\nAfter 10 years of hard work, beginning in 2000, Francesco achieved his dream. Today these 4 hectares of organic vineyards are planted with old vines of the native Ansonaco grape, along with around 25% red grape varieties, about twenty in total.
Terroir
The vineyards lie on the southwestern slopes of Giglio Island, part of the Tuscan Archipelago in the Mediterranean, on terrain steep enough that the vines seem to cling to the slopes. The plots were reclaimed through the construction of dry-stone walls to create terraces.
Vinificazione
The vineyards are organic. Restoration involved building dry-stone walls to create terraces, working the soil and grafting the vines onto the old, abandoned plantings.
Altura wines are made using natural winemaking methods, with respect for nature and tradition at the heart of the process.
Filosofia
The project is described as ambitious and almost utopian: restoring the island's ancient vineyards. Altura's winemaking holds respect for nature and tradition at the heart of the process, using natural winemaking methods.
