Vineyard and terroir

Tenuta Pian delle Vigne lies 6 km from Montalcino. The estate covers 184 hectares, of which 65 ha are vineyards in its southeastern section. The vines grow on slopes 130–200 metres above sea level, on rocky clay and chalk soils; the vineyards for this wine are described as limestone and clay soils.

Vinification

The grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. The juice goes into stainless steel tanks, where alcoholic fermentation takes place at 26 °C for 8–10 days, followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

The wine ages on its lees for around 10 months. The 2023 vintage was bottled on 22 July 2024.

Tasting profile

Fresh, mineral and very easy-drinking, with the appealing, pure aroma of Sangiovese.

Vintage notes

2023: The first half of the year was rainy, especially April and May, and the summer was generally hot and dry. This supported even budding, rapid shoot growth and flowering, followed by fruit set. Favourable differences between daytime and night-time temperatures during ripening helped the grapes develop properly. Harvest began on 11 September with healthy, aromatic grapes.

Label / history

In the 19th century Pian delle Vigne was the name of the railway station on this land. The estate has belonged to the Antinori family since 1995.
