Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese comes from a vineyard of approximately 4 ha. Its exposure allows sea breezes to temper the summer heat, limiting temperature peaks and promoting even ripening. Tenuta Pian delle Vigne lies 6 km from Montalcino; its vineyards occupy 65 ha of the estate’s southeastern section, on clay-chalk and stony slopes at 130–200 m above sea level.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, then carefully sorted, destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, with two weeks of skin contact to preserve freshness.
Ageing
The wine spends at least two years in oak barrels, beginning in small vessels and continuing in larger ones, followed by a long period in bottle.
Tasting profile
Fruity and earthy, with oak-derived aromas and notes of vanilla and chocolate. The palate is fresh and balanced.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with meat dishes served with berry sauce.
Vintage notes
The 2019 growing season was relatively calm. A dry end to spring, with only occasional rain in May, initially slowed vine growth. The summer was hot, but rainfall moderated the heat. Harvest was completed by the end of September, with Sangiovese showing balanced fruit aromas.
Label / history
Produced only in selected years from its small vineyard, Vignaferrovia was first released from the 2004 harvest. Its name recalls the nineteenth-century railway station on the estate, which was called Pian Delle Vigne.
