Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from hillside vineyards at 300–400 m a.s.l., with southern and southwesterly exposures. Vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot, with a yield of 50 hL/ha.
Grapes
Made entirely from the typical red grape of Montefalco. Contrario was first produced in 2008 as a fresher, early-drinking interpretation of this local variety.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand in the last week of September. Maceration vats are filled by gravity, and fermentation proceeds on the skins for 15–20 days at 25°C. Clarification is spontaneous, without filtration.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in stainless steel, followed by blending and clarification for 3 months in cement vats and at least 6 months in bottle.
Technical data
The 2020 vintage has 14.5% alcohol and is bottled in 750 mL format.
Tasting profile
Dense ruby red. The nose is rich and intense, led by fruit with distinct citrus and red-berry tones and subtle aromatic herbs. The palate is elegant and fresh, with a persistent, fruity finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C. It is suited to an entire meal, including pork cold cuts and cheeses, savoury first courses, legume soups, poultry, red meat and semi-matured cheeses. It can be enjoyed immediately but continues to develop in bottle for several years.
