Vineyard and terroir

Chiusa di Pannone is a 2.70 ha single vineyard planted in 1995 at 400 m a.s.l. It faces south, with rows following the slope, and is planted at approximately 5,000 vines per hectare. Its Pleistocene-origin clay-limestone soil is rich in gravel and fluvio-lacustrine conglomerates.

Grapes

100% Sagrantino derived from the estate’s massal selection. The first vintage was 2003.

Vinification

The grapes are generally picked by hand at the end of October and sorted before the maceration vats are filled by gravity. Fermentation and skin contact last 3–4 weeks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood.

Ageing

The wine matures for at least 30 months, predominantly in large oak barrels, then rests for several months in glass-lined cement vats before bottling. It is not filtered and is intended to benefit from extended bottle ageing.

Technical data

The 2018 vintage has 15.5% alcohol. Formats are 750 mL, a wooden case containing six 750 mL bottles, and a 1.5 L magnum in a wooden case.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. The nose is rich, powerful, ethereal and highly complex, with fruit and aromatic herbs expressed through citrus, cherry, wild berries, mint and oregano. The palate is deeply structured, with firm, integrated tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with grilled, roasted, braised or stewed red meat, game and very mature hard cheese. Sagrantino generally reaches full maturity 10–15 years after harvest, while this wine can continue ageing in bottle for more than 30 years.

Label / history

The name recalls a “chiusa,” historically an enclosed olive grove often bounded by stone walls. Chiusa di Pannone once served that purpose and is now the single vineyard reserved exclusively for this wine.
