Vineyard and terroir

Molino dell’Attone is the estate’s smallest-production Sagrantino cru, from a 0.50 ha single vineyard planted in 1990 at 400 m a.s.l. The site faces east and receives its most favourable sunlight in the morning; its rows follow the slope. Spacing is 2.8 × 1.0 m, equivalent to 3,571 vines per hectare. The Miocene, marine-origin soil contains galestro and gravel and is rich in minerals including phyllosilicates, quartz and feldspars.

Grapes

100% Sagrantino. The first vintage was 2015.

Vinification

The grapes are generally harvested by hand at the end of October and sorted before the maceration vats are filled by gravity. Fermentation and skin contact last approximately 40 days.

Ageing

The wine matures in 5 hL oak barrels for approximately 40 months—described elsewhere as more than three years—before blending. It is not filtered and receives at least one year of bottle ageing.

Technical data

The 2019 alcohol figure conflicts between language versions: 14.5% on the English page and 15.5% on the Italian page. Available formats are 750 mL, a wooden case containing six 750 mL bottles, and a 1.5 L magnum in a wooden case.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. The nose is notably elegant and complex, combining fruit and aromatic herbs with citrus, cherry, wild berries, mint and oregano. The palate is fine yet structured, with firm, integrated tannins, and develops further through long bottle ageing.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with grilled, roasted, braised or stewed red meat, game and very mature hard cheese. Sagrantino generally reaches full maturity 10–15 years after harvest, and the wine can continue ageing in bottle for more than 30 years.
