Vineyard and terroir
Selected Sagrantino parcels lie on hills at 300–400 m a.s.l., facing south and southwest. Vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot and average approximately 15 years of age. Yield is 45 hL/ha.
Grapes
100% Sagrantino. The first vintage was 1981. The variety has been cultivated for centuries on Montefalco’s Umbrian hills and is associated with wines of considerable structure and longevity.
Vinification
The grapes are generally harvested by hand in the second half of October. Vats are filled by gravity. Fermentation and skin contact last 25–40 days at 25–28°C. The wine clarifies spontaneously and is not filtered.
Ageing
Maturation lasts at least 18 months, predominantly in large oak barrels. The wine then rests for several months in glass-lined cement vats before bottling and benefits from extended bottle ageing.
Technical data
The 2019 vintage has 15% alcohol. Formats are 375 mL and 750 mL bottles, a 1.5 L magnum in a wooden case and a 3 L double magnum in a wooden case.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red. The nose is rich, powerful, ethereal and complex, combining fruit and aromatic herbs with citrus, cherry, wild berries, mint and oregano. The palate is highly structured, with firm, persistent tannins integrated into the wine.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C with grilled or roasted meat, braised or stewed red meat, game and mature hard cheese. It generally reaches full maturity 10–15 years after harvest and can continue ageing in bottle for more than 30 years.
Label / history
The Italian presentation recounts a tradition that followers of Saint Francis brought Sagrantino to Montefalco from Asia Minor.
