Vineyard and terroir
Marea comes from approximately 1.5 ha near Lake Corbara in the Tiber Valley. The vines stand at 200–300 m above sea level with south-west exposure. The sedimentary ground contains marine fossils, pebbles and calcareous agglomerations; it is also described as Eocene-origin marly clay rich in marine fossils. Wind, morning humidity and a pronounced day-to-night temperature range contribute to aromatic concentration.
The Rhine Riesling vines are 15–60 years old, trained as alberello at a density of 4,000 vines/ha. Approximate yield is 60 q/ha. Viticulture is biodynamically inspired: no herbicides or pesticides are used, and fertility is managed with biodynamic preparations, shredded pruning material, and grass-and-legume green manure.
Grapes
Rhine Riesling, descended from old material planted near Lake Corbara by Vittorio Barberani.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested manually in August and September. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in stainless steel for 20 days at 15–20 °C. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous bacteria in 225-litre French oak barriques.
Ageing
One year in delicately toasted French oak barrels, followed by three years in bottle.
Technical data
The wine is certified organic and identified as vegan. It is classified as Umbria IGT White.
Tasting profile
Deep golden yellow. The bouquet is rich, intense and fruity, with spice and hydrocarbon notes. The palate is soft, rounded and dynamic, combining iodine, saline and tropical nuances.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 12–14 °C. Suitable for varied first courses, shellfish, boiled or roasted fish, fried dishes and white meats.
Label / history
Vittorio Barberani’s interest in Riesling led him to plant old Rhine Riesling material beside Lake Corbara. The alberello training form was chosen to intensify the variety’s character and convey the marine identity of the soils.
