Vineyard and terroir
The 2005 fruit was selected from the best young vineyards at Cerrete in the hills of Montefalco, approximately 400–430 m above sea level. The east–southwest-facing vineyards have clay and silt soils with layers of river pebbles. The wire-trained vines are planted at approximately 2,000–2,300 vines per hectare and yielded 50 q/ha.
Grapes
100% Sagrantino, the indigenous variety of Montefalco.
Vinification
The grapes were picked by hand in the first half of October and transported in small stainless-steel containers. They were destemmed at harvest and fermented on the skins. Fermentation and maceration lasted 46 days. Forced sulfiting was avoided to preserve the grape’s original character.
Ageing
The wine matured for 12 months in steel and 24 months in large 25–30 hl wooden barrels, followed by 12 months in bottle.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14.0%. Production comprised 9,120 individually numbered 750 ml bottles.
Tasting profile
Round and crisp, with an overall balanced profile.
Serving and pairing
Recommended with roasts, cheese and dry cakes.
Vintage notes
The summer of 2005 was very balanced, combining favourable rainfall with ample daylight. Harvest began in the first week of October to await the best natural ripeness.
