Vineyard and terroir

SanValentino comes from its namesake site on the hills of Montefalco, at approximately 400 m above sea level. The east–southwest-facing vineyard has clay soil. The vines are trained to spurred cordon at a density of about 2,000 plants per hectare, with a yield of 50–60 q/ha.

Grapes

A blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Sagrantino; exact proportions are not given.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested by hand in the second week of October 2006 and transported in small stainless-steel containers. They were destemmed at harvest, followed by 40 days of fermentation and maceration on the skins.

Ageing

The wine spent 12 months in stainless steel, 24 months in large 25–30 hl oak barrels and 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

Alcohol: approximately 13.5%. Production: 16,600 bottles of 750 ml.

Tasting profile

Dry and harmonious. Contemporary comments on the 2006 wine noted limited color and slight oxidation.

Serving and pairing

Recommended with pasta, red meats and cheese.

Vintage notes

Rainfall and sunlight were balanced during the 2006 season, producing a good, even year. Conditions led to the creation of this blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Montefalco’s historic native grape, Sagrantino.
