Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is grown at around 300 m in Monteriggioni, on limestone soils. The vines are 10–15 years old. The estate’s sedimentary soils consist mainly of calcium carbonate, and yellow marble is quarried in the area.
Grapes
The blend consists mainly of Sangiovese with a small proportion of Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and destemmed. They macerate in stainless-steel tanks for 15 days and ferment at a controlled temperature of around 28 °C. Malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
Part of the wine matures in oak barrels for four months, while the remainder spends two months in steel tanks.
Tasting profile
The wine is elegant.
Vintage notes
In 2021, Tuscany experienced a winter of moderate temperatures and average rainfall. Budbreak occurred in the final week of March, after which a sudden cold spell slowed vine growth. Hot, dry conditions in May and June allowed the vines to recover. Ripening proceeded slowly and evenly, and the harvest began in the second week of September.
Label / history
The wine takes its name from Achille Sergardi, who headed the salt customs in the late 1400s. The Bindi Sergardi family built Tenuta I Colli in the late 1400s, and its history spans 23 generations. The estate is in the northern part of the province of Siena, in the villages of Monteriggioni and Vagliagli. It was also the setting where Bishop Achille Sergardi received Emperor Charles V’s delegation for talks intended to secure a peaceful settlement for Siena.
