Vineyard and terroir
The fruit grows at around 350 m above sea level on limestone and marl soils. The vines are 15–20 years old. Tenuta I Colli lies in the northern part of the province of Siena, at Monteriggioni and Vagliagli. The estate’s sedimentary vineyard soils consist mainly of calcium carbonate; yellow marble is also quarried locally.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, destemmed and macerated in stainless-steel tanks for 15 days. Fermentation takes place at a controlled 26–28 °C. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine matures in oak barrels for at least 12 months, followed by further maturation in bottle in the winery’s cellars.
Tasting profile
Elegant.
Serving and pairing
Decant for one hour before serving.
Vintage notes
In 2019, Tuscany had a generous harvest. Spring was rainy and cooler than usual, and flowering began slightly later than normal in June when warmer weather arrived. Summer temperatures remained within the normal range, with a good difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
Label / history
The wine takes its name from Nicolo Sergardi, governor of Siena in 1530, who was known as “Ser Gardo,” meaning “Sir Guardian of the City.” The Bindi Sergardi family built Tenuta I Colli in the late 1400s and has been associated with it for 23 generations. At the estate, Bishop Achille Sergardi received a delegation from Emperor Charles V for negotiations toward a peaceful settlement for Siena.
