Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese comes from the “La Boncia” vineyard in Monteriggioni, in the Chianti hills, at about 300 metres above sea level. The site has stony soil, and its vines are 10–15 years old. Tenuta I Colli lies in the northern part of the province of Siena, around Monteriggioni and Vagliagli. The estate’s vineyards have sedimentary soils composed mainly of calcium carbonate; yellow marble is also quarried in the area.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness, destemmed and macerated in stainless-steel vats for 10 days. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of about 25 °C. After racking, malolactic fermentation continues until the end of winter.
Ageing
The wine rests in steel tanks and is bottled in spring. Depending on the vintage, a portion may spend a short period in oak barrels.
Tasting profile
Elegant, with fruit and floral aromas.
Vintage notes
In 2021, Tuscany experienced a moderately warm winter with average rainfall. Budbreak occurred in the final week of March, after which a sudden cold spell slowed vine growth. Hot, dry conditions in May and June allowed the vines to recover. Ripening was slow and even, and harvest began in the second week of September.
Label / history
The wine is produced at Tenuta I Colli, an estate built by the Bindi Sergardi family in the late 1400s. The property’s history spans 23 generations of the family. At Tenuta I Colli, Bishop Achille Sergardi received an embassy from Emperor Charles V to negotiate a peaceful settlement for the city of Siena.
