Vineyard and terroir

The wine comes from Braida’s Limonte property in Rocchetta Tanaro, a site of just under 2.5 hectares planted in 2010 at 5,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard faces south-east, and its soil is 40% silt, 30% sand and 30% clay.

Grapes

100% Grignolino. After an initial picking for the traditional Limonte, three bunches are left on each vine to overripen. The length of this period varies with the vintage, and the late-picked fruit becomes Limonte GB.

Vinification

Approximately 30% of the grapes are vinified as whole berries for 15 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in cask.

Ageing

The wine ages for one year in cask and then undergoes extended bottle maturation. The first commercial set of vintages was released in January 2025.

Tasting profile

The 2018 is an intense, concentrated garnet with the orange nuances associated with Grignolino. Its rich and intense nose shows aromatic herbs. The palate is full, enveloping and structured, with a firm yet velvety tannic weave supporting concentrated fruit. The broad, persistent finish brings balsamic notes, rhubarb and spice.

Serving and pairing

Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Pair with strongly flavoured cheeses and alpine cheeses. Available in a 0.75 L bottle.

Vintage notes

The 2016 growing season had temperatures and rainfall in line with the preceding 30-year average. The wine is garnet red, with balsamic mint, coffee and chocolate; a savoury acidic line amplifies these flavours, while the tannins wrap the palate elegantly.

The 2017 season was the second hottest in 60 years and had little rainfall. The garnet wine offers a fresh, elegant floral bouquet, followed by violet candy, crunchy cherry and almost ethereal notes on the palate.

The warm 2018 season had average rainfall. The garnet wine smells of dried flowers, toast, truffle and tobacco. Energetic tannins accompany dark fruit, liquorice and rhubarb before a delicate gentian finish.

Label / history

Giuseppe Bologna conceived Limonte GB to emphasize Grignolino’s robust and decisive side and signed the project with his initials. Development began with the 2015 vintage, which was not commercially released; the project debuted with the 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages in a deliberately limited production. Fine waves on the label evoke the wine’s finesse and elegance, while the central gold lettering uses a classical, timeless style.
