Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards lie in the southern quadrant of the Montalcino hill. The combination of local weather conditions and soils supports the ripening of Sangiovese. The medium-textured soils are predominantly silty and sandy, with some clay, over sandstone and calcareous marl. Vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested from the third week of September through the first week of October. Maceration lasts 20 days at 28–30°C, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel.

Ageing

The wine matures for 36 months in a combination of 500-litre French oak barrels and 60-hl Slavonian oak casks, then spends a further 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2021 has 14.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.6 g/L and no residual sugar. Production was 60,000 bottles. Formats comprise 0.375 L, 0.75 L, 1.5 L and 3 L.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. The bouquet combines ripe wild berries and blackberry preserve with tobacco leaf and tanned leather. The palate is broad and generous, with a rich texture and a long finish marked by fruit-liqueur notes. Finesse and longevity define its traditional Brunello style.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C. Pair with a range of meats, especially game and wild boar, or with aged pecorino. Cellaring potential is 20 years.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season began with a mild, dry winter and early budbreak at the end of March in the earliest and best-exposed vineyards. Sub-zero temperatures during the first nights of April substantially reduced production. A rainy spring helped the vines withstand the long, hot summer. The resulting crop was small but of excellent quality.
