Vineyard and terroir

The wine comes from six hectares planted at the Campogiovanni estate in Montalcino, Siena. The Sangiovese plantings were established during the latter half of the 1990s specifically for Rosso di Montalcino DOC. The medium-textured soils are predominantly silty and sandy, with some clay, over sandstone and calcareous marl. The vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The grapes are macerated for 12 days at 28–30°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 12 months in large Slavonian oak botti, followed by a further two months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2024 wine has 13.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.54 g/L and residual sugar of 0.47 g/L. Production reported in the 2024 technical sheet is 28,000 bottles. The available format is 0.75 L.

Tasting profile

Ruby-colored and medium-bodied, with aromas of cherry, blackberry and cedarwood. The palate is crisp and lively, combining balanced acidity and well-integrated tannins with a silky texture and a notably persistent finish. Its lighter structure is shaped by freshness and early approachability.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 14°C. Pair with pasta in meat sauce accompanied by mushrooms or truffles, pork dishes, or veal with sauce. Cellaring potential is 5–6 years.

Vintage notes

The 2024 growing season began with a mild winter and limited rainfall. Regular spring rain supported good flowering. A very hot summer, particularly August, slowed ripening, and harvest began around the second week of September. Autumn rain made careful grape selection necessary, supported by targeted work in the vineyard. The crop was positive in quality and quantity. The resulting wines show elegant aromatic profiles, integrated tannins, moderate alcohol, balanced acidity suitable for ageing, freshness and an approachable, relatively light structure.

Label / history

Rosso di Montalcino demonstrates the versatility of the estate’s Sangiovese in a wine designed to be less structured and complex than Brunello while retaining balance, aromatic elegance and lively flavor.
