Vineyard and terroir

Il Quercione is produced only in exceptional growing years from carefully selected Sangiovese clusters grown in its 2.5-hectare namesake vineyard at the Campogiovanni estate. The medium-textured soils are predominantly silty and sandy, with some clay, over sandstone and calcareous marl. Vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The 2020 grapes were harvested on 7 October. Maceration lasted 25 days at 30°C and was followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

The wine matured for 24 months in 500-litre French oak tonneaux, followed by 36 months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2020 has 15.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.94 g/L and residual sugar of 0.84 g/L. Production comprised 3,682 bottles in 0.75-L and 1.5-L formats.

Tasting profile

Very deep ruby red. The emphatic bouquet brings together ripe berries, spice, cocoa and tanned leather. The palate is very full yet lean in character, with warm alcohol and ripe, succulent tannins. Depth, elegance and stylistic authenticity are coupled with considerable ageing capacity.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C. Pair with mixed grills, game, mushroom- or truffle-based dishes and aged cheeses. It can cellar for more than 20 years.

Vintage notes

The mild winter of 2020 prompted exceptionally early budbreak, but several sub-zero nights in March slowed vine growth and reduced yields. Alternating sunny and rainy spring conditions were followed by a moderately hot summer that allowed the vines to recover and the grapes to reach full ripeness. Low yields brought healthy fruit and excellent tannin maturity.
