Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
This Brunello comes from estate vineyards more than ten years old at an average altitude of 300 metres. The latest published vintage, 2021, is an equal blend of the Canalicchio and Montosoli crus. Canalicchio contributes clay soils rich in magnesium, iron and manganese; Montosoli contributes elevated galestro with a very high mineral component, clay-loam texture and abundant silt. Together they give mineral, savoury wines supported by acidity suitable for extended ageing. The vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with gentle daily pump-overs. Maceration lasts 25 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for 36 months in 25- and 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks.
Technical data
The 2021 contains 14.5% alcohol. Production comprised 1,283 half-bottles, 34,986 standard bottles, 1,045 magnums, 58 double magnums, 21 five-litre bottles, five twelve-litre bottles and three eighteen-litre bottles.
Tasting profile
The 2021 is a classically styled, floral and taut Brunello. Sweet-toned tannins are balanced by freshness and depth, while the blend brings together the balsamic character of northern Montalcino with the breadth of the estate’s clay soils. Its profile is lively, savoury, vertical and rounded, with energetic acidity, mineral definition and polished tannins.
Vintage notes
The 2021 growing season combined low winter rainfall, an April frost that reduced production, a dry summer without prolonged torrid heat, and strong day–night temperature variation. Rain at the end of August and stable September conditions helped complete phenolic ripening while preserving acidity. Grapes for the Brunello were harvested between 23 and 30 September. The vintage joins cool-year vibrancy to warm-year body and depth.
Label / history
Produced since 1966, this is the estate’s principal wine and is conceived as a complementary expression of its two terroirs, Canalicchio and Montosoli.
