Vineyard and terroir

Vigna La Casaccia lies in the Canalicchio cru at 297–315 metres above sea level. The vineyard was planted in 1990, with north–south rows spaced 3.00 × 1.00 metres and trained to spur-pruned cordon. Its predominantly clay and limestone-clay soil contains abundant mineral elements, particularly calcium, interspersed with stones. Constant sunlight from sunrise to sunset supports ripening. The site characteristically combines structure and depth with bright colour, elegance and supple, silky tannins.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with gentle daily pump-overs. Maceration lasts 25 days.

Ageing

The wine matures for 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks.

Technical data

The 2021 vintage has 15% alcohol. Production comprised 4,183 bottles of 750 ml and 135 magnums.

Tasting profile

La Casaccia is the more opulent expression of the Canalicchio cru, yet retains freshness and elegance. The 2021 combines power with refinement and highlights the cru’s balsamic character. Published assessments describe black cherry, blackberry, violet, tobacco, mint and graphite, supported by lively acidity, mineral tension and close-grained tannins. The finish is persistent and structured.

Vintage notes

The 2021 season alternated between contrasting conditions. Low autumn and winter rainfall was followed by an April frost that reduced production by about 30%. A dry but generally non-torrid summer, strong day–night temperature variation, late-August rain and a balanced September enabled complete phenolic ripening while preserving acidity. The resulting wines unite the vibrancy of a cool year with the body of a warmer one. La Casaccia was harvested on 25 September 2021 from its limestone-clay soils.

Label / history

First produced in 2015, Vigna La Casaccia was created to express the identity of its namesake vineyard across different vintages. Its modern graphic presentation also distinguishes it from the estate’s traditionally styled labels.
