Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from vineyards in Terricciola at Casanova. The approximately 2.4 ha of vines lie at 250 m above sea level, face south-east and average 30 years of age. The soil is sandy, marine in origin and rich in marine sediments.
Grapes
100% Prugnolo Gentile, an old variety generally regarded as a Sangiovese biotype and vinified here on its own.
Vinification
Maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place together in temperature-controlled vats for an average of 14–15 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in second-use French oak barrels.
Ageing
Twenty-four months in second-use French oak barrels, followed by approximately six months in bottle.
Technical data
Average production is 6,000 bottles. The first vintage was 2005.
Tasting profile
Refined aromas of plum and violet lead to a notably delicate palate. The tannic texture is less forceful but resembles that of Nebbiolo.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–17 °C. A Bordeaux glass is recommended.
Label / history
Prugnolo Gentile is vinified as a varietal wine to highlight its individual characteristics.
